Southbound on the Great Northern Peninsula

We had a great day today. It was sunny almost all day. We had a bit of cloud at one point in the morning - and then again at the end of the day.

Before we talk more about today - we did do the viking feast last night in St Anthony. It was fun - but if you have low patience for tourist stuff - give it a pass.

Before we left this morning -I had the full Newfoundland breakfast - Fried Baloney steak, home fries, eggs, baked beans, and toutons - it was delicious.

Then off we went - 430, 432, back on 430, out 431. back on 430, then the Trans Canada to Springdale Our first stop was the airport to see if we could see caribou - and guess what - we did!

Next stop was the arches - very pretty.

The entire drive down the coast is breathtaking. Mountains or plains to your left -and ocean to your right - really a pretty drive.

When we got to Gros Morne - I did the 1st 2km of the hike into the mountain - it is amazing.

Pictures do not tell the story -maybe this video tells it better?

On the walk back - I had to check for bells and pepper spray - nope - nothing to worry about

So - we continued south - and then turned west on 431 to go over to the Tablelands. Wow -what a fantastic decision. First -the road follows a very pretty lake. Then, up over a rise and  down into a twisty alpine valley. Then, up and over a rise and down along the cost of a fantastically beautiful fjord. Then, up another hill - and it looks like you are in the Alberta Badlands. This is all in about 40- 50 km.  You gotta come see this - just fantastic. A few pictures of the fjord:

A few pictures of the Tablelands:

The - down to Hw 1 - and off to Springdale - another great day. Tomorrow we head to St John's and meet up with Kim the next day.

A great day today. I need to come back with enough time to hike all the way up the mountain. And I would to spend more time on the 431. Plus, Laurance says the boat ride on Western Brook Pond looks really good. When we do the Labrador  trip next year - we are going to need to leave lots of time for the trip down this West Coast.
