The Salmon Glacier and then Boogie Woogie Down to Kitimat

So - the entire side trip to Stewart has been nothing but lucky breaks. If Glenn Holdbrook had not mentioned it, we would never have come to Stewart - I had never heard of it. Then, this morning, starting chatting with a guy in the parking lot about how great the Bear Glacier was on the drive down 37A. And he says - "No No No - you have not seen anything yet - cross the border back into Alaska - and drive the 20 miles up the gravel road to see the Salmon Glacier - that's a glacier".

So we did.Wow. Check out these videos.

What a great side trip. And - so lucky - I wonder what other things we have missed because we did not run into the right guy in the parking lot?

Then - some pictures to expand upon the whole day's experience. For me - the Salmon Glacier was the highlight - but the drive from Stewart to Kitimat was also fantastic!

Last night after I posted - I  took this  photo of Stewart - talk about deep in an alpine valley / fjord - had to add it!

These are all pictures of the the Salmon Glacier trip - the road up -and the glacier

Look carefully - a Chum Salmon - headed up Fish Creek to spawn

So - off we go on the road to Kitimat. Here - we are crossing the Nass River - on a one lane bridge with huge darned logging trucks going both directions. This drive down 37 was great - your classic case of follow a big river through a big glacier valley - go over a pass - and do it again. The entire drive down 37 - we were up and down between about 240m and about 400m - loved it - very pretty.

We joined the Yellowhead (Highway 16) at Kitwanga - more of the same - rivers and mountains - and guess what - it really does not get boring - because even though it is more of the same - it is always different. Here is the Skeena River - it is huge.

And - that's it for today - Tomorrow - short day - off we go for Prince Rupert - and then the next day -the ferry to Port Hardy!
