Air Travel Day to Inuvik

Up and at it early this morning (Wed) to head to the Dawson City airport. It was just finished raining, so as it turns out, we hung around the airport for a couple of hours - but hey - welcome to travel this summer - rain rain and more rain! The ceiling finally lifted - and off we went for Inuvik!

We did a quick stop at Old Crow - part of the scheduled route.

The vehicles parked in the parking lot at the Old Crow Airport - a bit different than YYZ

Getting close to Inuvik - over the Mackenzie Delta - this is the community of Aklavic. BTW - we were flying on an ATR 42.

More of the delta - the alpha and the omega.

The Inuvik airport includes a really pissed polar bear from which we both just narrowly escaped.

We checked into the Mackenzie Hotel. From what my brother tells me - and what local folks have said - the original burnt down more than 10 years ago. It had a bar called "The Zoo" - which if I recall the story correctly - had a game called bottle. The way you played bottle was you finished your beer, and threw it up over your shoulder and yelled "bottle". The objective of the game was to not get hit by the bottle. Scotty, correct me if I have misremembered the story.

I continue my tradition of including the cenotaphs of Canada. This is a nice simple memorial here in Inuvik'

Had a really nice dinner at Alestine's. The nice fish dinner was cooked in a school bus - and served to us on a patio on on the roof of what used to be the garage and is now the dining room's 1st floor. I loved it. You gotta eat here!

Scotty - telly me some of the stories about The Mad Trapper again. We decided to give it a pass today. Maybe we need to hit it for a beer tomorrow night around midnight when we get back from Tuk? Good idea? Bad idea?

The famous Igloo Church

And that is about it! We are off for the boat trip up the MacKenzie early and not due back until late. SO - you might not get and update until Friday when we are back in Dawson City. Very excited about tomorrows trip. I have my cigar for the Arctic Ocean all lined up!

Cheers -until next time!

  1. Buddy. I love the game of bottle. We use to play at University. The rule we had. (One rule was enough) Once you finished a beer you had to throw the bottle to an open spot on the floor. If you were so unlucky as to have a bottle break on your turn you were in charge of the evenings cleanup.
