Back to the Yukon - Anchorage to Beaver Creek

Ok, so we had a few beers with a nice dinner at the Moose's Tooth in Anchorage Monday night. Very yummy. If you are in Anchorage - good spot for dinner.

Then -  Tuesday Morning - up and at it to run back up from Anchorage to Beaver Creek.

We had seen most of this before - except for the stretch from Tok to the border. But - the 1st major highlight was the Matanuska Valley - which includes an amazing river and mountains - and oh - did I remember to mention - the huge bloody Matanuska Glacier?(!!)?

Looking at Mt. Stanford and Mt. Wrangell from near the Tok Junction. I would have to say - this was as good as the Matanuska Glacier - these are HUGE mountains - very impressive. When you are headed the other direction - I think you miss how impressive this is. I think if we had spent a bit of time looking for the best vantage points - this might have been the winner of the day.

Then - a few pictures to give you a another peak at it.

A few bike road remarks. I loved the last few days. I lot of fun riding - some of it challenging - fast sweepers, tight corners, and some very challenging road conditions - big frost heaves and transitions to gravel sometimes without much warning. In my younger more adventurous days - I would have had a couple of nuts-in-your-throat moments for sure. But - I was moving at a fast touring pace - not a full-on sport-touring pace - and had no close calls - all though the nuts did head north a couple of times (nothing to worry about Mom, I am being careful).

This really is fantastic country - and you should come and see it!

Oh - not a drop of rain today! We never got rained on hard - BUT - this is the first completely rain free day since we left Dawson City! The gods like to rain on my bike days!

One last thing - I had to put on my cleanest dirty shirt today (Wed). Gonna need a laundry day - hopefully later today in Haines Junction.

  1. Very cool Alex!
Will you be eventually heading south on 37? If so a jog along 37A to the Bear Glacier is kinda interesting. There's gas in Stewart if you need a full up.

    Have fun!

  2. Hi Glenn, yup, we are going down 37 to Prince RUpert - and then taking the ferry to Price hardy to bypass the fires. We are in Whitehorse for scheduled maintenance, and if we make good time out of here - we will have a look at Bear Glacier! Thanks for the tip.
