The Klondike Highway South Through the Chilkoot Pass to Skagway

We have sort of moved in to Whitehorse I guess. Because - while the bike's scheduled maintenance got done - we did a side trip down the Klondike Highway South Through the Chilkoot Pass to Skagway.

Before I tell you about today's trip - it seems fair to sum up Whitehorse. We both really like this town. Between the two times we have been here on this trip - we have ended up spending 7 days here - and had fun on all of them. Some advice for others coming to Whitehorse:

  • The Coast High Country Inn is for sure our favourite hotel. Good  service, nice patio, good breakfast, and modern clean fairly large rooms
  • The Woodcutters Blanket is the place for cocktails - yummy. Good snacks, great cocktails, good ambiance. Tell Chantel that Kim, Laurance, and Sandy sent you.
  • For beers, sports, and fun people - the place to be is the Dirty Northern Public House - known by many of the locals as the "Dirty Northern bastard". What a lot of fun.
  • By far the best meal we had was at an Italian place called Giorgios Cuccina - try the Arctic Char - it is perfect
Tomorrow - off we go down Highway 37 - AKA - the "Stewart-Cassiar Scenic Route" - so wanted to sum up Whitehorse - because we really liked it.

Today was an unplanned treat. Because the bike was in for maintenance - we took advantage of the change to see the Chilkoot Pass. That was without a doubt the highlight of the trip - the drive through the pass - but Skagway was fun - and we got a really tasty Thai / Filipino lunch.

A few short videos to start you off:

I think those give you a feeling for the trip - but these pictures I think fill in the gaps. Make sure you scroll down to the picture of the souvenir for Kim which I did not buy - I think not buying it was the right move - but I do have regrets. Also  not that the funny picture order is because I was using both the phone and the DSLR - and the timestamps are different - and I have no energy to sort it out - you can figure it out.

Skagway - would this have made a nice souvenir for Kim?

A very cool bike sculpture made out of wood at Yukon Yamaha where I got my service done.

And that is it. Just a great day - again - wow. Off we go for Dease Lake in the morning.
