Carry On Down (Then Up) the Mackenzie - To Tuktoyaktuk and Back to Inuvik

On Thursday- we had a fantastic adventure riding the Mackenzie River (mostly East Channel) and a short distance across the Beaufort Sea (aka the Arctic Ocean) from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk and back. The pictures tell the story.

I want to start with the last picture of the day. We left Inuvik at 8 in the morning. We returned at midnight. This is the view almost due north up the Mackenzie from the Inuvik public dock and almost exactly midnight - 23:57 to be exact.

Great views of the MacKenzie and of the Caribou hills to the East

Jerked whale and eskimo donut! Yummy!

A visit to a fishing / whaling camp.

A great look around Tuktoyaktuk.

Including a chance to wade / swim / skinny dip in the Arctic Ocean. Anyone want to guess what my choice was?

Then - back across the short bit of Ocean and back down the river. I liked a lot of these views better. It seemed to me that with the Sun further NNW - the light was better.

So - today (Friday) back on the plane and off for Dawson City. We started the day with a bike wash - and then rest up before we head to Tok tomorrow. But - we needed to walk around town a bit first!

The memorial to the Wreck of the Princess Sophia. Quit a disaster - I had never heard of it!

The SS Keno

That's it for now! So - off to Tok in the morning!
