A Day Exploring the Dawson City Area

We had a great time on Tuesday (yesterday) exploring Dawson City and region. We started with a trip to the museum to see a gold mining demo. They demoed both an old rocker box and panning. Look - gold in the pan! Cool. I think Kim & Lynn could pan enough gold to keep us in beer if we retired up here!

A view down 5th Avenue to the Moosehide Slide.

Then, we drove back out the Klondike Highway to see the beginning of the Dempster. We drove about 20 km up the Dempster to have a look - and then stopped to see the signs at the beginning of the highway. I got a kick out of the bear warning. We talked to a natural resources guy a little later in the day - and he felt the warning was maybe a little over-blown - but hey - better safe than sorry!

That reminds me - this is a link to the Canadian watershed map I found a few days ago. As we have been traveling - it has been interesting noticing where all the various watersheds are! Hmm, I wonder if I can include a trip in to the Canadian Gulf of Mexico watershed? I did not even realize that existed until I saw this map.

The other thing - we are seeing tons of poplar up her. A bunch of it is the normal green bark poplar I am used to from being a kid in Alberta - and the the bit of poplar we see in Ontario. In addition, there is a ton of poplar with very white bark, and I was not sure what it was. The natural resources guy confirmed it was poplar - so there you go.

On our way back in to town - we saw a sign for the "Midnight Dome" lookout - very glad we did - what a great view.

Back in to town and a wander about. Had a very tasty lunch at Sourdough Joe's. While we were sitting there - a really windy and hard rain front moved through - and the rain pounding on the steel rough was just incredibly loud and the wind wind was totally outrageous. So -we had a second beer and waited for the storm to clear, and then continued to explore.

Back to the museum - lots of good stuff  including some directions on how to tan a moose hide, and some old steam engines.

A visit to the Dawson City Cenotaph

Had a nice dinner at the Aurora Inn, and then over to Diamond Tooth Gertie's for a beer and watch the dancing girls!

This morning, we are off to Inuvik. Writing this post while we wait for the airplane to arrive. Will post once I get connected in Inuvik (Done!)
