A Road Day - Up the Klondike Highway to Dawson City

Monday was a day to get back on the road. We took Kim to the airport - and she flew back to Toronto via Vancouver. Kim reports that she had a safe flight and arrived home just fine. Miss you Kim, see you in a few weeks in Vancouver.

Then, off to the Chevy dealer to get a diagnostic for a check engine light. It turned out that there was no serious problem - BUT - we lost most of the day. We did not leave Whitehorse on the 530 km trip to Dawson City until nearly 16:00 - and that meant we did not arrive until nearly 22:00! A long day.

We left  Whitehorse in a drizzling rain - I had all my rain gear on - and the visibility was not bad - so really not a bad ride. The stopped at Carmacks and filled with gas - and then off in the rain - which had gotten a bit heavier.

When we got to Pelly Crossing- it had stopped raining - so got a good picture of the bridge over the Yukon River.

I think I missed a ton of good pictures - the rain just made the seeing too poor to really tell. By the time we got to Stewart Crossing  - the rain was torrential - the light sucked -  the road was bad including loose gravel and big frost heaves  - the visor on my helmet kept wanting to fog up - and just to top it off - we started to get a lighting storm! The song that was playing in my head was "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"- and the line that was really resonating with me is "Does any one know where the love of God goes When the waves turn the minutes to hours" - it was a really shitty 40 - 50 minutes.

The next 50 - 60 km were just exhausting. By the time we got to just about the Dempster Highway turn off - we started to pop out of the rain - plus we could see the long arctic twilight west of Dawson up the valley - so the last 40 - 50 km were not bad at all!

In to dry clothes and over to Diamond Tooth Gertie's for food a beverage - and meet some new people!

This morning, we will get caught up on laundry, and then head out to explore the area! Very excited about tomorrow's trip to Inuvik and then the boat ride up to Tuktoyaktuk!
